Thanks Jerry. Alas I did not coin the term “statusphere” but it does capture the essence of it doesn't it? I agree with the ease and abundance of self-publishing tools out there it's hard to find a good reason why you wouldn't have that home base carved out on the web.

Jeffery, great point about the domain name. It all comes down to personal preference. The reason that I advocate going with a generic URL is that I recently had a situation where I built a very successful blog on a specific topic that I lost interest in. After 2,000 posts and millions of pageviews I felt like I had put a lot of effort into something that I was now locked into. So I ended up selling the blog. I wished that I had a generic platform where I could expand into other areas, which is why I ended up advocating for a generic space. But I can definitely see both arguments.
